About BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE 80%

Benzalkonium Chloride 80% (often abbreviated as BKC or BAC) is a highly concentrated solution of a quaternary ammonium compound. It functions primarily as a potent surfactant, antiseptic, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. Because 80% is an industrial-strength concentration, it is rarely used directly and is typically diluted down significantly for commercial, medical, and industrial applications.
Chemical & Physical Properties

  • Chemical Class: Quaternary ammonium compound (cationic surfactant).
  • CAS Number: 63449-41-2
  • Grade: Industrial Grade
  • Purity: 99% active base component concentration prior to formulation adjustment.
  • Appearance: Clear to pale yellow, viscous liquid with a characteristic bitter taste and a faint, aromatic odor.
  • Density: Standardized density profile measured in grams per millilitre (g/mL) to ensure strict quality control during manufacturing.
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, alcohol, and acetone.
  • Mechanism of Action: It kills microorganisms by disrupting their cytoplasmic membranes, causing cellular contents to leak out, leading to cell lysis (death).

Primary Applications

Because of its powerful biocidal properties, BKC 80% serves as a core raw material across several industries:

1. Disinfectants & Sanitation (Industrial & Household)

  • Formulations: It is the active ingredient in many institutional disinfectants, hospital cleaners, and household sanitizers.
  • Surface Cleaning: Used to formulate cleaners for floors, walls, and hard surfaces in food processing plants, dairies, and breweries because it is highly effective against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses.
2. Water Treatment

  • Algaecide: Widely used in swimming pools, industrial cooling towers, and reservoirs to prevent and eliminate algae growth.
  • Aquaculture: Used in low concentrations to maintain water hygiene and prevent bacterial infections in fish and shrimp farming.

3. Oil & Gas Industry

Biocide: Added to drilling muds, fracturing fluids, and oil pipelines to prevent the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which cause pipeline corrosion and souring of oil wells.

4. Pharmaceuticals & Personal Care (Highly Diluted)

While the 80% concentrate is strictly industrial, it is diluted down to concentrations typically ranging from 0.01% to 0.1% for use as:
  • Preservatives in eye drops, nasal sprays, and ear drops.
  • Antiseptic active ingredients in skin cleansers, wound care wipes, and hand sanitizers.
5. Wood Preservation

  • Used in timber treatment formulations to protect wood against fungal rot, mold, and insect infestation.

Safety, Handling, and Hazards

At an 80% concentration, Benzalkonium Chloride is classified as a hazardous substance and must be handled with extreme care.

  • Corrosiveness: It is highly corrosive to the skin and can cause severe chemical burns and permanent eye damage.
  • Inhalation: Inhaling vapors or mists can cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract, coughing, or shortness of breath.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When handling the 80% concentrate, operators must wear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or PVC), safety goggles/face shields, and protective clothing.
  • Environmental Impact: It is highly toxic to aquatic life. Spills must be contained and prevented from entering waterways or drainage systems.
Common Dilution & Storage Notes

  • Storage: Store at room temperature in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and incompatible materials (like strong oxidizing agents and anionic surfactants, which neutralize its effectiveness).
  • Incompatibility: Because it is a cationic (positively charged) surfactant, it loses its antimicrobial efficacy if mixed with anionic (negatively charged) surfactants, which are commonly found in standard soaps and laundry detergents. Regulatory parameters like custom HS codes or EINECS numbers are tracked under standard chemical cargo protocols upon shipment verification.
